 Webraska Navigation Guidance Modes

Webraska Navigation offers crystal clear voice instructions as well as four alternative guidance modes: zoomable vector maps, pictograms, directions list and overview maps.

Webraska Navigation additionally offers traffic optimized routing and five alternative destination entry modes. Finally, the main features include Webraska Navigation's ability to bookmark the user's favourite addresses and to save the previously downloaded routes.

 Zoomable vector maps

Zoomable vector maps permit drivers to follow their progress while receiving information regarding their next manoeuvre. Detailed information provided includes next street name, road sign information, simplified turn pictograms, distance to the next manoeuvre, and traffic information overlays (where available).

 Pictograms

Pictograms provide drivers with a simplified view of the next manoeuvre accompanied by the distance to the next manoeuvre (including countdown bar), the current street name and city and the next street name and city.

The pictograms provided by Webraska are dynamically generated, geometrically accurate representations of the road layout. Most other products use static predefined libraries of icons. If the real road layout does not confirm to one of the predefined icons, the instructions provided will be misleading or confusing.

 Directions summary

The directions summary provides drivers with a text-based overview of the proposed route, including street names and cities, anticipated traffic congestion, manoeuvre pictograms, distance between two manoeuvres, estimated time to be spent on each route segment. Many drivers find it helpful to scroll through directions summary before starting their journey, to gain a broad understanding of the route ahead.

 Overview map

The overview map presents the proposed route in a graphical format, highlighting the route (in pink), the current location of the driver (arrow head icon) and departure/ destination locations (green and red flags). As for the vector map, real-time traffic conditions are displayed via colour codes and icon overlays.

The overview maps provided by Webraska Navigation are clearer and richer in detail than those of any other product on the market.

 Voice instructions

The voice instructions provided by Webraska Navigation are of exceptional clarity and quality. These help drivers keep their attention on the road instead of the screen of their mobile phone.

Webraska has paid particular attention to the sound quality of the voice instructions optimising output to the audio capabilities of smartphones and other handsets.

With safety top of our list of priorities, manoeuvre instructions are sequenced to enable drivers to prepare for and execute turns in time. Drivers receive the three instructions, triggered by their current GPS location. For example:

  1. "... in 100m at the roundabout, take the first exit..."
  2. "... at the roundabout, take the first exit..."
  3. "... take the first exit..."

 Traffic information

Real-time traffic information is used to calculate optimum routes upon request and reduce total journey time

Route optimisation

In addition, Webraska Navigation's Smart Traffic Update function makes use of dynamic traffic data information to automatically investigate and propose better routes at any time during navigation. Detailed information about traffic events ahead is displayed so that the driver can understand the reasons for any delay ahead of him and take an alternative route. How does it work? Webraska Navigation makes use of traffic data updates to automatically request a new route calculation to the server and get a newly calculated arrival time. When the difference between the current remaining time of travel compared to the newly calculated remaining time is significant, Webraska Navigation proposes the better route and indicates the reason for the delay. Providing that the driver accepts, the newly calculated route is downloaded. Otherwise, navigation remains on the current route. Traffic speed and traffic event information is overlaid on maps :

  • Colour coded indication of traffic congestion
  • Icons representing specific traffic events
  • Radar location

 Destination Entry Modes

Webraska Navigation offers drivers five alternative destination entry modes: via the keypad, contact list, points-of-interest, last addresses, favourites or postcode.

To facilitate address input via the keypad, Webraska Navigation uses artificial intelligence techniques to recognise addresses even if entered partially, with spelling mistakes and/or abbreviations. Alternatively drivers can use address from their primary list of contacts, synchronised with Outlook from their PC.

Webraska Navigation uses up-to-date digital map data provided by Navteq incorporating over 590 000 points-of-interest in 22 categories in 23 countries. Drivers can select a point of interest by category and/ or location as a destination.

In the United Kingdom, drivers can use full UK postcodes to define their destination: e.g. "SW1A 1AA" for Buckingham Palace. Most other products only offer partial postcodes e.g. "SW1A", guiding drivers to the district, but not to a specific address.
