Largest mobile operator in France and the UK in 2002,
Orange SA is one of the world's leading communications companies. Webraska
broke the news in October 2002 when announcing a major deal with Orange
World for the provision of Webraska's LBS middleware SmartZoneTM
Geospatial Platform as well as compelling, country-specific applications.
Webraska was selected for benchmarking against competition on performance,
scalability and robustness criteria. Initial services were launched in
France and the UK in Q2 2003, following a customization phase to comply
with Orange's specific branding requirements. Launched services generally
include a full range of location-enabled "Finder Service" that provide
subscribers with information about nearby restaurants, cash machines and
entertainment venues. Finder services are seamlessly integrated with direction
and mapping applications, the latter optimized to device screen size,
resolution and color depth.
In May 2004 Orange France pioneered the launch of a GPS
navigation solution for mobile phones in Europe. Based on Webraska's SmartZone
Navigation software, Orange France's GPS navigation services enables Orange
subscribers to convert their smartphone into a mobile co-pilot by purchasing
an Orange 'all-in-one' kit. The kit turns customer smartphones into an
intuitive navigation device capable of providing spoken, traffic-aware,
turn-by-turn navigation instructions in real time across the entire European
region. The service runs on Symbian Series 60 and Microsoft based smartphones.
Announced at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Orange France's navigation
kits are already available from France Telecom agencies and will be available
from Orange's Mobistore and selected distributors before Q4 2004. Orange
plans to market the service in other European countries in the near future.
